Why is the garage door not opening ? May be a broken spring.
Does your garage door opener only lifts the door a few feet and then goes back down? or does the door not even move but you can here the opener trying to lift it?
Sounds like you have a broken spring. This is what we here many times and almost always its a broken spring.
Lets identify what type of spring you have first
1. Torsion Springs: This spring sits on a torsion bar and you can see the spring on the bar. You can also see the coils, similar to the image above.
2. Torque Tube: The springs are inside a tube. There will be just a bar nothing on it and it also sits above the door.
3. Extension Springs: The springs are not above the door but on the side of the door.
With a torsion spring & extension springs sometimes the spring will show a break and or a gap. Torque tubes you won’t be able to see the break but with all the springs if the door is to heavy to lift, and the opener won’t lift the door then most likely you have a broken spring. Typically springs last about 10 years and are meant to break after some time. The springs hold a lot of tension and they hold most of the weight of the door. So when the spring breaks the door is dead weight and very hard to open.
If you know you have a broken spring, do not try to open the garage door. There have been cases were people were seriously injured. Trying to use the garage door opener on a broken spring can damaged your opener or break it completely.
